Project explanation: Why Savannah?
The port city of Savannah in eastern Georgia is just a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Atlanta, one of the largest cities in the USA.
As the oldest city in the state of Georgia, Savannah is always well worth a visit. Especially as its history and Southern charm attract nearly 10,000,000 visitors every year.
In 2022, Savannah welcomed 9.7 million overnight visitors and recorded more than $4.4 billion in total visitor spending. Savannah’s growth can be attributed to several factors, including pent-up travel demand, expanded air services (27.5% more air arrivals compared to 2021) and an expanded range of tourism offerings.
Savannah has a small-town, dreamy feel to it, but its historic centre is one of the largest still preserved in the USA.
The film "Forrest Gump" was filmed in Savannah in 1993 and won six Oscars. The original park is open to visitors. The original bench, where Oscar-winner Tom Hanks sat looking confused and dreamy, is now on display at the city’s Historical Museum.
Increased demand for accommodation in the city (9.2% more hotels and 3.3% more short-term rentals than in 2021) resulted in $44.5 million in bed tax revenue in 2022 (21.6% more than in 2021). Marinelli continued, "At the end of the day, this tourism story is about jobs."
The number of hospitality-related jobs in Savannah grew by 9.6%, creating around 2,300 jobs in 20221 and providing employment for more than 27,000 people in the Savannah region.
As well as creating jobs, the tax revenue generated by the visitor economy saves every household in Savannah at least $1,600 a year 2.
These statistics show that Savannah’s tourism economy benefits both residents and visitors.
