The port city of Savannah in eastern Georgia is just three and a half hours' drive from Atlanta, one of the largest cities in the USA.
As the oldest city in the state of Georgia, Savannah is always worth a visit. Especially as its history and southern charm attract almost 10,000,000 visitors every year.
In 2022, Savannah hosted 9.7 million overnight visitors and more than $4.4 billion in total visitor spending. Savannah's growth can be attributed to several factors, including pent-up travel demand, expanded air service (27.5% more air arrivals compared to 2021) and expanded tourism offerings.
Savannah appears small-town and dreamy, but its old town is one of the largest still preserved in the USA.
The movie "Forrest Gump" was filmed in Savannah in 1993 and won six Oscars. The original park can be visited. The original bench, where Oscar-winner Tom Hanks sat confused and dreamy, is now in the city's Historical Museum.
Increased demand for lodging in the city (9.2% more hotels and 3.3% more short-term rentals than 2021) resulted in $44.5 million in bed tax revenue in 2022 (21.6% more than 2021). Marinelli continued, "At the end of the day, this tourism story is about jobs."
Savannah's hospitality-related jobs grew by 9.6%, adding about 2,300 jobs in 20221 and employing more than 27,000 people in the Savannah region.
